At first read is seems Jesus is saying come to me and I will take away your burden and you will find rest. Look closer! He does promise to give us rest but he never says he will take away anything. Yes, with Jesus the burden is certainly lighter but it is still there and it is still a burden. Another passage states "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9) That implies doing what God expects of us is hard work - to the point of wanting to give up - but again God will sustain us and hold us up. I am afraid most of time, I want God to simply take away the hard work, the burden, the things He has called me to do. I want the easy way out. I don't want to have to work so hard. I want heaven here on earth. God did not call us to sit back and bask in all the blessings He gives us (granted those are great because they can encourage and restore us) - there is work to be done and we have all of eternity to bask in the presence of Jesus. But for now, in what seems like forever to us in our human flesh, it is more important that we are about the work that God has called us to do. We can stop and refresh ourselves at the feet of Jesus but can not give up!
