From the Word

I AM WEARY, LORD!
Do you ever get weary? Do you get to the point that you can't even go another step? I'm not just talking a little tired here, I'm talking about being exhausted and seeing no end in sight. It seems that life sometimes wears a person out. Why are we surprised when that happens? Wasn't one of the consequences of the fall of man manual labor. We would have to work in order to survive? I sometimes get this idea that life should be easy. It doesn't have to be hard work to the point of exhaustion. After all doesn't Jesus tell us to "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me... For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30) Let's look closer at that verse.

At first read is seems Jesus is saying come to me and I will take away your burden and you will find rest. Look closer! He does promise to give us rest but he never says he will take away anything. Yes, with Jesus the burden is certainly lighter but it is still there and it is still a burden. Another passage states "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9) That implies doing what God expects of us is hard work - to the point of wanting to give up - but again God will sustain us and hold us up. I am afraid most of time, I want God to simply take away the hard work, the burden, the things He has called me to do. I want the easy way out. I don't want to have to work so hard. I want heaven here on earth. God did not call us to sit back and bask in all the blessings He gives us (granted those are great because they can encourage and restore us) - there is work to be done and we have all of eternity to bask in the presence of Jesus. But for now, in what seems like forever to us in our human flesh, it is more important that we are about the work that God has called us to do. We can stop and refresh ourselves at the feet of Jesus but can not give up!
