From the Word

SINGER vs. MUSICIAN
In the church we use music for almost everything we do. Every service, every event - it seems every time the doors are open we also have an opportunity to perform. Let's face it, the church is one place where there is a regular platform for musicians to use their skills. So what is a Biblical perspective on music. Are there certain people God has called to be used in the music ministry? Is music a spiritual gift? Has God called you to be involved in a music ministry? I hope you will take the time to look at the scripture passages below and then prayerful consider where you fit into God's program.

All believers are "called" to sing. Ephesians 5:19 says, "Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord." There are also a number of verses in Psalms that tell us to "make a joyful noise" or "sing to God a new song." Everyone can sing but not everyone is a musician - a person who is trained in music. God calls out musicians as leaders in music. 1 Chronicles 6 shows how David assigned some of the priests, who were trained in music, to provide music for the temple. We also find many verses in Psalms that talk about "playing skillfully to the Lord."

Look for opportunities to use your gifts. Always be willing to get more training. Take private music lessons. Take a music course at a local college. Join the church choir or instrumental group. Above all keep your motives in check and be sure to let God open the doors in His time.
