The questions I struggle with most are these: Who determines what is good art and what is bad art? What do we use as a measure to declare this is quality and this is drivel? If one does not write, it is easy to be a critic. If one does write it is easy to criticize others. My desire is to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. I work hard to write quality music that communicates God´s Truth and honors Him but I know there are many times I fall short. Isn´t that part of being human? I also realize there must be some kind of standard. We can&180;t just use the old adage "If their heart is right, that is all that matters." Let´s be honest, there have been times my heart has not been right and people would not know the difference. The reverse has been true as well. I have felt the very presence of God with me in a writing project or performance and someone has questioned the appropriateness of the offering. So where do we go from here?
I hope to be able to encourage people to be faithful to what God has called them to do. Instead of spending time on determining what has value and what does not, spend time becoming better at what you do. We can not know the heart of anyone else. I have a feeling there are many things we have dismissed that God has found to be a wonderful offering to Him. How many of us would be appalled to watch an Old Testament sacrifice, yet God called it a fragrant aroma, a worthy offering to Him. Maybe we are too quick to judge what other Christians are offering as true acts of worship to our God. Maybe the song does only use 3 chords, but does simplicity mean it is substandard? Let#180;s spend our energy on seeking God and understanding more of what He expects of each of us.
