I Heard the Bells

"I Heard the Bells" takes place in Chicago in 1933. It is a tumultuous time as the United States is in the heart of the depression. Gangsters abound, we near the repeal of prohibition and Franklin Delano Roosevelt is beginning his New Deal approach to boost the economic crisis. On the international stage, Adolf Hitler is coming into power.

Charlie Preston is a reporter for the Chicago's American. He and Liv Baldwin, the secretary to the editor, are an item, but do not see eye to eye on a number of issues, particularly those regarding faith. Charlie has uncovered a big news story about the local soup kitchen run by gangster Frankie "Bells" Burton. If Charlie goes public with the story, it is certain Frankie will do whatever it takes to stop it. Liv pleads with Charlie to drop it, but he feels a responsibility to the people who are being exploited by Frankie.
